Watch Freya in training – Doing it Her Way
Many of you will have seen the information we circulated regarding the Captain Tom 100 challenge that runs from Friday 30th April to Monday 3rd May.
Freya, who currently attends First Step, supported by her mum as her coach, has taken up the challenge to walk 100 steps in her walking frame each day over the Challenge weekend.
We may take for granted being able to walk wherever we want, but for some of the children that attend First Step, both they and their families put a huge amount of effort into completing many basic tasks.
This provides a unique opportunity for our many supporters to get behind Freya and her family, to raise funds via JustGiving that will come directly to First Step.
As you can see from the video, each step made by Freya is a real effort.
We at First Step have been so inspired by what Freya and her mum plan to do for this challenge that we wanted to share this with you.
Freya’s mother told us:
"Freya was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 8 months old after suffering a traumatic birth that led to HIE grade 2 brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. This affects all four limbs, which makes it hard for Freya to carry out everyday challenges such as walking."
Having heard about ‘Captain Tom 100’ last week, Freya’s mum decided to set a challenge for Freya starting from Friday 30th April to Monday 3rd May. Freya’s challenge will mean that for each of those days, Freya has to walk 100 steps in her frame at a time.
In Freya’s mum’s words:
"First Step has given us hope & got us prepared for Freya to start a mainstream nursery soon. They’ve just been a god send. First step is a nursery based in Hornchurch for children with disabilities, and family support. Unfortunately due to the pandemic they’ve had to close the nursery so they’ve struggled financially which includes lack of funding from the local authority. Fortunately for us they have still remained open for one-to-one family sessions, and support. We’d love to help them as much as we can, & help get the funding they need to open back up as a nursery in the future to help many other children like Freya."
Please help support Freya in smashing her target and help raise some much needed funds for First Step.
