"Thank you so much for the care and support you have given us. We arrived at first step bemused and afraid and will leave confident and resolute."

Playgroup

First Step has 4 playgroup sessions weekly when the children are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of play and educational activities, tailored to the child’s individual needs, in a stimulating environment. The sessions, each for 10 children with 5 staff, are in great demand.

All children are given opportunities to experience a wide variety of activities related to the Early Years Foundation Stage and suggested Early Learning Goals for Nursery Education (Dept for Education & Skills). In broadest terms this covers all areas from painting, messy play, colour recognition, shape and colour matching, imaginative play, multi-sensory stimulation to basic computer skills together specific encouragement for each child’s individual needs.

Each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that is reviewed termly by the playleaders with contributions invited from parents. The IEP’s help in the monitoring and planning for each child. There is close liaison with the Under Fives Inclusion Service (if they are visiting the child at home) and other professional agencies who may be involved with the children who attend First Step. Any relevant information or recommendations are incorporated into the child’s Individual Education Plan.

An Annual Report is given to parents to inform them about their child’s progress and achievements. With parental consent the report can be shared with other professionals who are working with the child and it is helpful for other settings when a child moves on.
